More about our history

Originally known as Remuera Menswear established in 1955 by Bob Burnet the retail outlet was based in the heart of the Remuera shops. Around 1976 the shop was relocated to the Upland Road centre by Russell Taylor who also added Boyswear to the name and stock. The shop had always stocked about six school uniforms (boys) mainly the local catholic schools including St Peter’s College and Sacred Heart Boys College.

On July 1st 1986 David & Karen Kranz purchased the business which Karen ran for the next 18 months until the birth of their son. In the early nineties George Courts closed their Auckland store, and as the major supplier of school uniforms a large gap in the market appeared. David & Karen soon saw the opportunity to specialise in only school uniforms and accessories.

While concentrating on the retail and customer side of the business, the opportunity arose to supply schools as far south as Dunedin. Now another wing of the School Uniform Centre supplies uniforms directly to schools and colleges all over the country.

In late 2018, after 15 years in the business in varied roles ranging from Office assistant to production Manager & General Manager, Samara Kurta & partner Kirk Meredith purchased the School Uniform Centre from David & Karen. Kirk comes from a retail background with 20+ years in fashion retail.

2019 saw the move to the old McLaren garage at 588 Remuera Road, meaning all operations could be consolidated under one roof in a lovely historic building. In 2022 the McLaren site was sold to developers who had the intentions of creating apartments and did not see a School Uniform shop in their future plans, this prompted a move out of the Remuera area for the first time to our current location at 169 Manukau Road Epsom. The central retail store caters for over twenty local schools and colleges, and our outreach shops now operate at a number of venues around Auckland.
